Mayor Brown Urges Federal Lawmakers to Save the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program

Spokane, WALocal News

Mayor Lisa Brown urged U. S. lawmakers to protect the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which has been crucial for Spokane's infrastructure and social services since 1974. In 2024, Spokane received nearly $3 million in CDBG funding to support projects like affordable housing and community food banks. This funding also provides legal and advocacy services for domestic violence victims and workforce training for low-income women.

Brown warned that eliminating CDBG would severely impact vulnerable communities and hinder local economic growth. Luke Tolley from the Bemiss Neighborhood Council noted that key local centers rely on CDBG funding to operate. As Congress deliberates on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget, Brown is calling on Representative Michael Baumgartner to oppose any cuts to the program. The funding not only supports essential services but also empowers neighborhood councils to prioritize local projects. CDBG funding remains a cornerstone for maintaining safety and community needs across Spokane.
