Mayor Brown Announces Proposals to Jumpstart New Affordable Housing Development

Spokane, WALocal News

Mayor Lisa Brown announced a legislative package aimed at boosting affordable housing development in Spokane, with a goal of adding 22,359 new units by 2046. The package aligns with the H. O. M. E.

Starts Here Initiative, which focuses on improving housing stability for residents. A significant proposal includes the establishment of the Housing Equity and Attainable Residences Trust Fund, which will provide flexibility in funding for affordable housing projects. Mayor Brown also aims to implement a permit fee deferral program, allowing developers to defer fees of up to $150,000, thereby alleviating upfront financial burdens. Furthermore, the City plans to modernize its development code to enhance clarity and efficiency, addressing longstanding inconsistencies. The proposals are expected to remove barriers for developers and encourage the construction of income-restricted units.

Mayor Brown stated, “Spokane needs more housing units at all levels, but especially affordable units. ” These initiatives represent a proactive approach to tackling housing challenges in the city.
