Mayor Brown Announces Proposals to Jumpstart New Affordable Housing Development

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown introduced a legislative package to enhance affordable housing development, aligned with the H. O. M. E. Starts Here Plan.

The proposed changes include renaming and restructuring the HEART Fund for greater flexibility in funding affordable housing projects. Developers could defer up to $150,000 in permit fees, easing financial pressures during the early stages of construction. The city also plans to modernize its development code to ensure clarity and efficiency in housing regulations. This initiative responds to a pressing need, as Spokane aims to create over 22,000 new housing units by 2046. Mayor Brown noted, “Spokane needs more housing units at all levels, but especially affordable units.

” The measures reflect a strategic effort to address housing stability and affordability in the region. By removing barriers and streamlining processes, the city seeks to foster an environment conducive to sustainable development.
