Spokane City Council Adopts Engagement and Enforcement Ordinances

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane City Council approved two new ordinances during a recent legislative session to address homelessness more effectively. Ordinance C36679 consolidates existing laws on unauthorized camping into a unified policy, making it a misdemeanor citywide while emphasizing engagement and navigation services for those affected. Ordinance C36694 defines aggressive solicitation, detailing behaviors that may intimidate individuals. Council Member Zack Zappone noted that the new regulations do not provide immediate solutions for where individuals will go but allow the Council to focus on developing safe spaces. Council Member Paul Dillon highlighted the ordinance's role in maintaining public health and safety while clarifying existing laws.

The Council plans to evaluate the implementation of these ordinances continually. Collaboration with local businesses and organizations is ongoing to find upstream solutions for homelessness. For further details on the Council’s approach, residents can visit the Spokane City website.
