City of Spokane Responds to SREC Board's Move to Terminate Spokane Fire Department Contract

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) Board voted to terminate its contract with the Spokane Fire Department by January 1, 2026. In response, the City of Spokane will create its own emergency communications system and seek equitable distribution of tax revenues. Currently, the city holds only two seats on SREC's ten-member board, despite accounting for over 50% of call volume and nearly half of SREC's tax revenue. Mayor Lisa Brown condemned the decision as irresponsible, highlighting the need for a smooth transition to ensure public safety. Fire Chief Julie O’Berg expressed disappointment, asserting that the focus will remain on community safety and seamless emergency coordination during the transition.

The city plans to pursue funding arrangements from past sales tax and the upcoming 911 excise tax, starting in January 2026. This decision reflects ongoing governance challenges within SREC and the city’s efforts for fair representation. The SREC Board's actions have drawn criticism for potentially compromising public safety.
