EvCC again closing Early Learning Center

Snohomish, WALocal News

Everett Community College announced its intention to close the Early Learning Center on June 30, which will result in layoffs for about 50 staff members. The center offers essential childcare services for children from infancy to age 5, primarily for EvCC families but with additional spots for the community. College officials report an unsustainable financial model, predicting a $300,000 deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The closure has sparked community outrage, with a rally scheduled for June 25 to protest the decision and advocate for the center's continuation. Parents and staff express deep disappointment over the lack of consultation prior to the announcement, emphasizing the center's quality rating and its role in a region already facing childcare shortages.

College leaders are exploring leasing the facility to a specialized organization, following previous attempts to close the center that were halted by community protests. Despite past funding interventions, the college states that it must now focus resources on its core educational mission. The situation raises significant concerns about childcare access in the area as families struggle to find alternatives.
