Executive Somers Announces Plan for 12 Million in Federal Pandemic Recovery Funding for Child Care
Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers announced a $12 million initiative on January 12, 2023, to expand access to affordable child care, funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act. This plan surfaced from community feedback highlighting child care as a critical need during the pandemic. Alarmingly, 80% of county residents reside in "extreme child care deserts," with only 62 child care slots available for every 100 children needing care. The proposed funding includes $5 million for start-up and expansion grants for child care facilities, $3. 8 million for workforce development and retention, and $200,000 for community-led recruitment efforts.
Local council members emphasized the plan's significance, particularly for women affected by high child care costs, and its potential to support families returning to the workforce. As Councilmember Megan Dunn noted, this funding will address inequities in child care access, crucial for economic recovery post-pandemic. The initiative aims to foster a stronger community by ensuring families have reliable child care options, which are essential for a thriving workforce. Investing in child care is viewed as a vital step toward supporting local businesses and enhancing the overall economy of Snohomish County.
