Snohomish boat noise complicated to enforce

Snohomish, WALocal News

Snohomish City Council members tackled the issue of boat-related noise pollution during their Oct. 7 meeting, responding to concerns from residents living near the Snohomish River. Local resident Alice O’Grady described how excessive noise from boats has disturbed her and her neighbors. Councilmember Judith Kuleta reiterated that the problem affects both the environment and residents' quality of life. Despite previous discussions in 2019, the matter remains unresolved due to jurisdictional complexities between the city and county noise ordinances.

Chief Nathan Alanis pointed out that noise even within the 75-decibel limit can still be disruptive if it is prolonged. Thomas-Murphy proposed posting signage at boat launches to inform boaters of compliance rules. The council aims to collaborate with state and county authorities to explore both immediate and long-term solutions. This initiative highlights the community's growing concern over maintaining a peaceful and sustainable river environment.
