Monroe council debating on its trash hauler
The Monroe City Council's Transportation/Planning, Parks & Recreation Committee is evaluating its solid-waste contract with Republic Services, with a decision expected on November 18. Three options are on the table: amend the current contract, renew it without changes, or switch to a different refuse service. Concerns over communication and service quality arose following a three-week labor disruption in July, during which local Republic workers walked off the job. Mayor Geoffrey Thomas criticized the company's response to the labor dispute as “woefully inadequate. ” The P3 Committee noted that exploring new haulers could provide financial and service benefits, including improved contract terms.
However, challenges remain, such as the time and resources required for negotiating a new contract. A representative from Republic Services offered apologies during a recent council meeting, emphasizing the company’s commitment to restoring trust. The council aims to finalize decisions by July to implement any new contract by January 2026.
