Downtown Silver Spring Loses Port-au-Prince Haitian Restaurant This Weekend

Silver Spring, MDLocal News

Chef-owner Don Berto will permanently close Port-au-Prince Haitian Cuisine this weekend, with a celebration planned for Haitian Flag Day on Sunday, May 18, from 3 to 9 p. m. The restaurant, situated at 7912 Georgia Ave. , opened its doors in 2018 after a successful pop-up period and earned a place on Eater’s list of the best outdoor dining patios around D. C.

Berto announced on Instagram that while the restaurant will close, customers can still purchase select items like rum cakes and hot sauce. The closure signifies a notable loss for the local culinary landscape, particularly within the Haitian community, as the restaurant served as a cultural hub. Many patrons appreciated the authentic Haitian dishes and the vibrant atmosphere it provided. Berto's emphasis on quality Haitian cuisine contributed to the restaurant's popularity and community ties. The farewell event invites locals to celebrate the restaurant's legacy and enjoy its signature offerings one last time.

This closure highlights the challenges faced by small businesses in maintaining longevity in a competitive market.
