Silver Spring, MDLocal News

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has initiated a grant program to support small businesses affected by the construction of the Maryland Purple Line. In the first round, $1 million has been distributed among 100 businesses, with grants ranging from $1,000 to $40,000. Over 450 applications were received, and recipients were chosen based on their demonstrated need and proximity to priority impact areas. Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld highlighted the economic growth opportunities the Purple Line presents for communities from Bethesda to New Carrollton.

Businesses that did not receive funding in this round are encouraged to apply in the next cycle, which opens on June 2, 2025. The Maryland Purple Line light rail project is currently 76% complete, with 80,000 feet of track installed and all 21 stations under construction. Eight light rail vehicles are undergoing testing, with more vehicles expected to arrive soon. The project is slated to begin service in winter 2027.
