Velatis Caramels Exits Downtown Silver Spring, New Bethesda Store Coming Soon

Velatis Caramels has closed its downtown Silver Spring store after 16 years and plans to open a new location in Bethesda. Owner Amy Servais thanked customers for their support but has not announced a specific opening date for the new store at 4928 Hampden Lane. Historically, Velatis Caramels relocated from Richmond to Washington, D. C. , in 1866 after a devastating fire.

The company changed ownership multiple times, with Servais reviving it in 1996 after convincing her family to invest. With a background in women's fashion, Servais perfected the caramel recipes over several months before launching mail-order sales. The company has expanded its presence in the region, including locations at The Pentagon and Mark Center in Alexandria. The closure of the Silver Spring store was reported by The MoCo Show and initially announced last June. Velatis Caramels remains a beloved local institution with deep historical roots.
