Emmas Torch to Open Flagship Culinary Training Center in Downtown Silver Spring

Silver Spring, MDLocal News

Emma's Torch will open a flagship Culinary Training Center in downtown Silver Spring to assist refugees and survivors of human trafficking. The nonprofit signed a lease for the former Scion Restaurant site, which closed in 2019, and has initiated the "Kitchen We Build Together" capital campaign to raise funds for the new facility, anticipated to open in early 2026. Executive Director Kerry Brodie stated that the center will strengthen the organization's roots and increase its ability to support more individuals in the culinary field. The program offers an 11-week paid workforce development initiative that combines classroom learning with on-the-job training, culminating in job placements. Since its inception in 2016, Emma's Torch has graduated more than 600 students, many of whom have found employment with leading restaurant groups.

Notably, seven alumni recently joined Union Square Hospitality Group's new Daily Provisions in Dupont Circle, representing 20 percent of its staff. The new location will replace the existing D. C. café and allow for greater outreach and deeper community impact. Brodie emphasized the importance of providing students with the tools and support needed for success.
