No Kings Protests in Silver Spring and Takoma Park Set for Saturday
Silver Spring will host five protests as part of the national No Kings Day of Peaceful Action on October 18, contributing to over 2,500 protests nationwide. Local activists are mobilizing against President Trump’s actions, promoting messages of equality and nonviolence. Charles Chapman, an event organizer, anticipates 400 to 500 participants lining Georgia Avenue at Leisure World, along with two buses heading to the National Mall. The Veterans Plaza will serve as one of the rally sites, with additional gatherings at Beltway overpasses and in Takoma Park. Historical participation in similar protests, such as June’s event, saw over 2,000 attendees, indicating strong community engagement.
Organizers stress the importance of nonviolent actions, with training provided for event marshals in de-escalation practices. Local partnerships include organizations like the ACLU and MoveOn, showcasing a broad coalition for the protests. These events reflect growing local and national movements advocating for democracy and civil rights.
