MDOT Opens Third Round of Purple Line Small Business Grants

Silver Spring, MDLocal News

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) initiated the third round of its Purple Line Small Business Grant Program to assist small businesses impacted by light rail construction in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Eligible businesses can apply for grants up to $50,000, with a total of $4 million allocated over four years for this initiative. Applications are due by November 7, and businesses must have been operational before July 1, 2023, to qualify. MDOT has already awarded $1. 5 million to over 150 businesses this year, showcasing the program's reach and importance.

Notably, Café via Roma is ineligible due to its September 2024 opening, which does not meet the new operational requirement. Business owners express challenges in maintaining customer flow and covering expenses during construction. The grant program aims to mitigate the financial strain on these businesses. Funding restrictions exclude certain types of businesses, such as those dealing in cannabis and adult entertainment.
