Maryland State Highway Administration Announces 50.8 Million for Georgia Avenue Safety Improvements
The Maryland State Highway Administration has committed $50. 8 million to enhance safety and accessibility along Georgia Avenue in Montgomery Hills. This project will cover a 0. 7-mile stretch that carries about 71,500 vehicles daily, addressing a significant local transportation priority. Acting Maryland Transportation Secretary Samantha J.
Biddle highlighted community advocacy as vital in securing the funds. Improvements include adding three to four lanes in each direction, dedicated bike paths, and a landscaped median. The Georgia Avenue/Capital Beltway interchange will be reconfigured to improve traffic flow, and new sidewalks will be installed with a signalized pedestrian crossing. The project also aims to facilitate connections from the Forest Glen Metro Station to the future Maryland Purple Line station. Current efforts focus on final design and utility relocations, with construction slated for spring 2028.
Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart described the project as transformative for local communities.
