Over 30 Silver Spring, Takoma Park Businesses Receive Purple Line Grants

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) awarded over $500,000 in grants to more than 30 businesses impacted by the construction of the Purple Line. These grants, which range from $5,000 to $40,000, are part of the MDOT's Purple Line Small Business Grant Program, which aims to invest over $4 million over four years to support eligible businesses along the corridor. The second round of funding received over 350 applications, while the first round saw more than 450 applications and $1 million in grants awarded. MDOT prioritizes grant awards based on business location and proximity to construction areas significantly impacted in the past and upcoming months. Samantha J.

Biddle, MDOT Acting Secretary, emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses during construction, stating they are vital to the economy. Several businesses, such as Mandalay Restaurant & Café, received grants, while others like Café via Roma did not qualify. The next funding cycle opens on October 6, with applications due by November 14, 2025. The 16-mile Maryland Purple Line is currently 80 percent complete, with service expected to begin in winter 2027.
