Downtown Silver Spring 7-Eleven Shutting Down August 20

Silver Spring, MDLocal News

A 7-Eleven store in downtown Silver Spring will permanently close on August 20 as part of the chain's strategy to close 444 underperforming locations. This decision follows a decline in sales and customer traffic, driven by inflation and a notable 26 percent drop in cigarette purchases since 2019. Seven & I Holdings, the parent company, reported that while the North American economy is strong, consumers, particularly those in lower income brackets, are spending more cautiously due to persistent inflation and high interest rates. In response, 7-Eleven plans to invest in food offerings, which have become the top sales category, as regional competitors like Royal Farms and Wawa expand nearby. The closure represents roughly three percent of 7-Eleven's total U.

S. portfolio of over 13,000 stores. The store is situated near the new Salon 444 and Mezcal Cantina at 1319 Fenwick Lane. The company continues to review its locations, emphasizing a growth strategy focused on convenience for customers. The replacement tenant for the Fenwick Lane space has not yet been disclosed.
