Fenton Street-Wayne Avenue Closure Nears End with Maryland Purple Line Construction Update

Silver Spring, MDLocal News

The Fenton Street and Wayne Avenue intersection in Silver Spring will reopen around September 8 after being closed since mid-June for Maryland Purple Line construction. The project experienced delays due to unforeseen utility line conflicts, but senior project director Ray Biggs II assured that it is still on track for a winter 2027 launch. The intersection's reconstruction includes light rail track installation and stormwater drainage work. In addition, the Spring Street Bridge is under reconstruction, with significant coordination required with utility companies and transit authorities like CSX and MARC. This 16-mile light rail project is more than 80% complete, with over 60% of the rail installed.

The complexities of the construction area necessitate halting work for passing trains, according to Purple Line deputy communications director Ken Forsythe. The project aims to improve public transit accessibility and is a critical component of local infrastructure development. As the project progresses, it signifies a long-term commitment to enhancing transportation options in Montgomery County.
