Maryland Purple Line Crews Address Utility Conflicts at Fenton-Wayne Intersection
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) confirmed the Fenton Street and Wayne Avenue intersection will remain closed until September due to unforeseen utility conflicts. Construction crews are actively working to install rail tracks, upgrade stormwater drainage, and reconstruct sidewalks as part of the Maryland Purple Line project. MTA Communications Director Kathryn Lamb indicated that utility issues are expected to be resolved by September 5, making the reopening of the intersection crucial for connecting light rail service to the Silver Spring Library. The project is currently 80% complete, with more than 54% of the rail track installed along the 16-mile alignment. Throughout the closure, the Purple Line has collaborated with local business associations to ensure public awareness of detours and support for affected businesses.
In May, the Maryland Department of Transportation awarded $1 million in grants to over 100 businesses near the Purple Line alignment. The next round of applications for the grant program opens on October 6, 2025. The Maryland Purple Line is anticipated to open in winter 2027.
