Magpie Thrift ready for new beginning in longtime Broadway thrift shop space

Seattle, WALocal News

Lifelong Thrift is set to become Magpie Thrift, marking a new chapter for the beloved Capitol Hill thrift store that has served the community for over twenty years. Owner Tamara Asakawa, who previously directed Lifelong, is committed to fostering a culture of reuse and recycling, with plans for upcycling workshops and assistance programs for seniors. Asakawa envisions Magpie Thrift not only as a shopping destination but also as a hub for community engagement, supporting marginalized groups similar to its predecessor. The store will begin as a for-profit venture to fund the launch of Everly, a nonprofit that Asakawa hopes to merge with Magpie in the future. The grand opening on April 5th promises to be a vibrant community event, featuring giveaways and a blessing from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

Donations will be accepted from March 25th to 31st, leading up to a soft opening on April 1st. This transition reflects a broader movement towards sustainability within the community, with an emphasis on practical job skills for young volunteers. Magpie Thrift aims to uphold the values of Lifelong while creating a space for creativity and support within the LGBTQ+ community.
