Seattle Public Schools rejects plan supported by mayor and police chief that would have stationed cop at Garfield High School
The Seattle School Board rejected a plan to assign a Seattle Police Department officer to Garfield High School, despite support from Mayor Bruce Harrell and police chief Shon Barnes. Board member Michelle Sarju highlighted concerns about trust, stating, "You all have broken my trust over and over again. " This decision follows extensive debate, particularly after the murder of student Amarr Murphy-Paine in 2024. The board's rejection underscores community concerns about disproportionate policing and the need for more inclusive safety measures. Although two board members voted in favor of the proposal, the Garfield PTSA criticized it for not aligning with community advocacy.
SPD has maintained an increased presence around the school, responding to ongoing violence, with officers reported in the area. Additionally, Garfield High has implemented alternative safety strategies, including the hiring of violence interrupters. The board's decision marks a continuation of the district's efforts to prioritize community engagement in school safety discussions.
