WSP tackles firearms forensics backlog with new hires and training
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is addressing a backlog of 955 firearms forensics cases, with a current wait time of 379 days. Chief John R. Batiste emphasized the necessity to restructure and grow forensic capacity due to an increase in firearm-related criminal cases. Over the past two years, WSP has hired eight new Forensic Firearm Scientists, with four already examining evidence. While training presents challenges, WSP expects the backlog to peak at 1,054 cases this summer but anticipates a 10% reduction by January 2026.
The recent Crime in Washington report shows a 31% rise in gun-related crimes compared to 2023, underscoring the urgency of addressing the backlog. Batiste aims to double testing capacity to meet rising demands, with a goal to reduce the backlog by 35% by July 2026. Ultimately, WSP aspires to turn around firearms cases in 120 days or less by January 2028, which would significantly enhance their operational efficiency. This restructuring reflects a broader trend of increasing firearm-related incidents in Washington state.
