Popular Washington hikes see surge in search and rescue calls

Seattle, WALocal News

Search and rescue teams in Northwest Washington are grappling with a surge in calls as more people venture into popular wilderness areas. King County Search and Rescue (KCSAR) reported 27 backcountry missions between Memorial Day and July Fourth, reflecting a 400% increase in May and a 550% rise in June. Most rescues stem from challenging trails like Mailbox Peak, Mount Si, and Snow Lake, which are well-known on social media. KCSAR spokesperson Sara Autio highlighted that many hikers may not be adequately prepared for the strenuous conditions. In response, Skamania County Sheriff Summer Scheyer has proposed an ordinance to fine reckless hikers to encourage safer behavior.

However, some rescue organizations caution that fines might prevent individuals from calling for help in emergencies. Experts recommend that hikers carry essential gear, plan their routes, and communicate their plans to others. By understanding their limits and respecting trail warnings, hikers can reduce risks and enhance their outdoor experiences.
