Seattle hopes permit streamlining will keep light rail expansion on track West Seattle in 2032, Ballard in 2039
Mayor Bruce Harrell signed new legislation this week to expedite construction of light rail extensions to West Seattle and Ballard. The legislation aims to streamline paperwork and halve permit review times for Sound Transit projects, addressing concerns over delays. It outlines six coordination areas, including comprehensive tree management and improved accessibility for bicycles and scooters. The Ballard extension, costing approximately $11 billion, is projected to open in 2039, while the West Seattle link is estimated at $7 billion and slated for completion by 2032. This legislation comes as Sound Transit begins testing connections across Lake Washington via I-90, with the Central District's Judkins Park Station also delayed until 2026.
These initiatives are seen as vital for enhancing public transit options in Seattle. Harrell's measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure timely delivery of critical infrastructure projects. The community's response to these changes will be pivotal as the city moves forward with its transit plans.
