Seattle voters will decide on 1.3B school levy renewal this fall

Seattle, WALocal News

Seattle voters will weigh a proposed $1. 3 billion school levy renewal this fall, designed to enhance funding for childcare, preschool, and K-12 educational support. The plan allocates $235 million for school safety, provoking debate over the potential return of Seattle Police officers to campuses. Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck introduced an amendment to ensure spending focuses on diversion and social programs to combat the school-to-prison pipeline. However, amendments from other council members leave room for the return of police engagement on school grounds.

Mayor Bruce Harrell highlighted the levy as a vital investment, projecting a $654 average annual impact for homeowners of median-value homes. The initiative aims to double access to affordable childcare and support job training programs, including the development of the Constellation Center for affordable housing and youth employment training. The project is expected to open in 2027, showcasing Seattle's commitment to addressing job training needs. In addition to the levy, the upcoming election cycle will involve major local races and a $45 million voucher program renewal decision.
