Shark Encounter Prompts Warning Signs at Torrey Pines State Beach

San Diego, CALocal News

Warning signs were posted at Torrey Pines State Beach after a swimmer encountered a shark estimated to be 7 to 8 feet long on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred near Lifeguard Tower 5 around 10:30 a. m. , with the shark swimming away after bumping the swimmer. State parks officials emphasized the rarity of shark interactions and have placed warnings at beach access points near Towers #2, #5, and #7, effective for 24 hours.

Last June, a swimmer was bitten by a juvenile shark off Del Mar, about 100 yards from a lifeguard tower, underscoring the area's connection to juvenile great white sharks. Officials aim to ensure visitor safety while reminding beachgoers of the ecological importance of sharks. The previous shark bite in Del Mar occurred on November 4, 2022, when a woman was bitten while swimming with friends.
