Mario C. Rivera Suicide Awareness Event Celebrates Fifth Year with Focus on Mental Health
The Mario C. Rivera Suicide Awareness Event, taking place Saturday, marks its fifth anniversary by fostering mental health awareness in the community. The event features a lowrider car and bike show, live music, and food, while providing vital information on mental health issues, including suicidal ideation. Elizabeth Munoz, co-founder of Jr’s Trauma Care Initiative, highlighted a significant cultural shift within the car community, which previously avoided discussions on mental health. Attendees now actively seek support and resources, reflecting a growing acceptance of mental health conversations.
Munoz established her organization to assist those facing obstacles similar to her own, stemming from her son's tragic death in 2015. The initiative offers various services, including therapy and community outreach, to help individuals and families. This year's event aims to educate attendees about the connections between depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, promoting a culture of openness and support.
