The Giant Dipper turns 100 at Belmont Park in Mission Beach

San Diego, CALocal News

The Giant Dipper roller coaster at Belmont Park in Mission Beach celebrates its 100th anniversary on July 4, 2025. This 75-foot-tall wooden coaster opened its doors to riders in 1925, quickly becoming a staple of the beachside amusement park. After nearly facing demolition in 1976, local advocate Tim Cole and the Save the Coaster Committee successfully raised funds to restore it, leading to its reopening in 1990. The coaster received recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1987, underscoring its importance to local history. Belmont Park is hosting 100 days of giveaways and food deals to commemorate the centennial, a move that aims to attract both locals and tourists.

The initiative runs through Labor Day, enhancing the park's festive atmosphere. The Giant Dipper remains a symbol of nostalgia and excitement for generations of visitors. Its survival and restoration highlight the community's commitment to preserving local heritage.
