Aguirre takes lead in San Diego County supervisor race

San Diego, CALocal News

Paloma Aguirre, currently the mayor of Imperial Beach, is emerging as the frontrunner in the San Diego County supervisor election with a lead of 53. 2% over Republican John McCann's 46. 8%. Aguirre's potential victory would secure a 3-2 Democratic majority on the County Board of Supervisors, which manages a significant budget of $8. 6 billion.

Her campaign centered on addressing pressing local concerns, particularly the cross-border sewage crisis affecting her city. Approximately 70,000 ballots were counted on election night, with an estimated 9,500 still outstanding. Aguirre expressed her commitment to working-class families in a statement, calling for urgent actions such as sewage cleanup and cost reduction. Meanwhile, McCann stated he remains in a competitive position. The seat became vacant following Nora Vargas's resignation after her re-election last December.

Aguirre would serve the remainder of a four-year term, representing the southern district of the county, potentially leading to policy shifts opposed by Republicans.
