Sammamish EMS Program Faces Recruitment Challenges Despite Life-Saving Success
The Sammamish Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program is facing recruitment challenges despite its impressive success in life-saving practices. In a recent council meeting, attended by Mayor Karen Howe and other officials, discussions centered around strategies to improve recruitment and enhance diversity within the program. The EMS program has achieved a notable success rate of over 51% in cardiac cases, significantly higher than historical rates. Chief Lane acknowledged the difficulties in hiring qualified paramedics and EMTs due to the demanding nature of the job. To address these challenges, the program is implementing various recruitment initiatives, including the Future Women in Fire and EMS workshops aimed at encouraging female participation.
Additionally, Eastside Fire and Rescue is focusing on funding and diversity in recruitment efforts. The council is set to revisit the proposed EMS levy rate of $0. 25 in May, which could bring in necessary funding. As the city works on a financial plan, the importance of mental wellness programs and targeted recruitment strategies is emphasized for fostering a diverse workforce.
