Sammamish, WALocal News

On December 10, the Sammamish City Council received an important update on the city's response to a major windstorm that caused extensive damage and infrastructure challenges. The storm, which featured gusts of up to 55 mph, led to widespread power outages and over 750 emergency calls, prompting a rapid mobilization of city crews. Despite initial safety concerns that required crews to pause operations, they quickly resumed debris clearing as conditions allowed. Notably, emergency responders, including chainsaw-certified police officers, worked tirelessly to restore access to affected areas. The city reported significant infrastructure damage, including 35 street signs and 260+ feet of guardrail, while also addressing the needs of displaced residents through a warming center.

The city is now appealing to state and federal authorities for emergency declarations to facilitate reimbursement for the expenses incurred during the disaster response. Furthermore, the city ramped up its communication efforts, achieving a staggering 393% increase in social media posts compared to pre-storm activity, ensuring residents remained informed. The ongoing commitment of the City of Sammamish to provide timely and effective disaster response underscores its dedication to community safety.
