Redmond is Changing from a Suburb to a City

Redmond, WALocal News

Redmond's transition from a suburb to a city is underway, with significant code updates under review by the Planning Commission, aiming for council approval in spring 2025. The 2025 Code Package, part of the Redmond 2050 Comprehensive Plan, seeks to implement urban standards and enhance equity and sustainability. The design standards will be streamlined, reducing the current 165 pages to less than 70 in the draft. Changes will affect nearly all neighborhoods and zoning districts, altering what can be built and the overall design aesthetics. Public hearings will kick off on March 26, focusing on design standards and housing updates, and will continue on April 9.

The City Council adopted the Redmond 2050 Comprehensive Plan on November 19, 2024, which includes various plans like the Overlake Neighborhood Plan and updates to zoning codes. This comprehensive plan aims to guide growth and change in Redmond for the next decade and beyond. The upcoming hearings and updates reflect the community's vision for a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future.
