City of Redmond and Sound Transit Celebrate Opening of Overlake Village Pedestrian Bridge
The City of Redmond recently celebrated the opening of the Overlake Village Pedestrian Bridge, a critical infrastructure project designed to enhance connectivity in the region. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, local officials emphasized the bridge's role in linking the Overlake Village light rail station to the 520 Bike Trail, ultimately fostering greater accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The $10. 4 million project received funding from a $1. 6 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program grant, a $5 million Transportation Alternatives Program grant, and additional city funds.
Mayor Angela Birney highlighted the successful partnership between the City of Redmond and Sound Transit, showcasing their commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. The bridge features unique artwork titled "Verdant," created by Seattle artist Leo Saul Berk, which reflects Redmond's technological history through its design. This innovative structure not only serves as a safe crossing over SR 520 but also adds a visually striking element to the Overlake Village area. King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci expressed enthusiasm for the bridge's connectivity potential, linking neighborhoods to major destinations. Community members are invited to experience the bridge and its artistic features, further promoting active transportation within the city.
