Redmond Police Warn Public About Organized Crime Group Targeting Asian Community

Redmond, WALocal News

The Redmond Police Department issued a warning on September 20, 2024, regarding an organized crime group targeting the Asian community, particularly older Asian Indian individuals. This advisory follows a disturbing series of 14 jewelry thefts, which include one robbery and two attempted robberies that occurred on September 19, 2024. The suspects typically drive rental SUVs and initiate contact with victims by asking for directions or offering to trade jewelry. During one incident, quick-thinking witnesses recorded the suspects, leading them to flee the scene. Chief Darrell Lowe clarified that these acts are crimes of opportunity rather than hate crimes, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance.

Residents are advised to stay alert, especially in affluent neighborhoods, and to avoid displaying valuables openly. The police recommend traveling in groups and securing jewelry when outside alone. Those approached by strangers offering trades or gifts are urged to report the incidents to law enforcement.
