Mayor Angela Birney of Redmond, Washington, has been appointed to the America’s Housing Comeback Advisory Group, a significant national initiative aimed at tackling local housing supply challenges. This group, led by the National League of Cities, gathers city leaders from across the United States to foster public-private partnerships and innovative housing solutions. Mayor Birney highlighted the critical need for safe and affordable housing, stating, “Every person has a right to safe and affordable housing. ” As a member of this group, she will engage in meetings to co-develop principles that enhance federal-local partnerships and address the housing supply agenda. This initiative aligns closely with Redmond’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in housing solutions as outlined in the Redmond 2050 comprehensive plan.

The plan aims to increase housing options, including duplexes and townhomes, and provide 20,000 additional housing units by 2044. Moreover, about 11,000 of these units are specifically designated for households earning 50% or below the area median income. The city’s previous Housing Needs Assessment has also informed its Housing Action Plan, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing housing challenges.
