Redmond Police Department Implements New Tool to Identify Drugs

Redmond, WALocal News

The Redmond Police Department has introduced a new handheld narcotics analyzer to improve officer safety and combat the escalating drug crisis. This high-tech device utilizes laser technology to scan through transparent packaging, identifying the chemical composition of over 530 controlled substances, including fentanyl and methamphetamine. By allowing officers to assess unknown substances without direct contact, the analyzer significantly reduces the risks of contamination and health hazards associated with handling dangerous drugs. The device also records all scan results, including timestamps, aiding in evidence preservation and tracking emerging drug threats. Costing approximately $31,000, the system is funded through opioid settlement funds allocated to address the ongoing opioid crisis in Washington State.

Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe expressed the department's commitment to tackling the growing drug issue and ensuring community safety. The implementation of this tool reflects a proactive approach to law enforcement in the face of evolving drug challenges. With this new technology, the Redmond Police Department aims to enhance the effectiveness of their operations while prioritizing the health and safety of their officers.
