Redmond High School Counselor Arrested for Having Inappropriate Relationship with a Student

Redmond, WALocal News

Derik Detweiler, a 35-year-old counselor at Redmond High School, was arrested for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. The case came to light when the student bravely reported the situation to staff at the Lake Washington School District on May 22. This prompted the school to place Detweiler on administrative leave and notify the Redmond police. An investigation ensued, which provided sufficient evidence for a warrant for Detweiler's arrest. On May 30, local authorities in Wyoming apprehended him without incident, and he is currently awaiting extradition back to Washington.

The charges against Detweiler include Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor in the Second Degree, and Furnishing Liquor to a Minor. Police Chief Darrell Lowe expressed gratitude to the student for her courage and emphasized the importance of parents having open conversations with their children about reporting concerning behavior. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities encourage anyone with more information to contact the Redmond Police Department.
