Derik Detweiler, a 35-year-old counselor at Redmond High School, was arrested for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. The investigation was initiated when the student reported the relationship to staff at the Lake Washington School District on May 22. Following this report, Detweiler was placed on administrative leave, and the police were notified, leading to a thorough investigation that uncovered enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant. Detectives located Detweiler in Wyoming, where he was arrested without incident on May 30. He faces serious charges including Communication with a Minor for Immoral Purposes, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor in the Second Degree, and Furnishing Liquor to a Minor.

Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe commended the student for her bravery in coming forward, stressing the need for open communication between parents and children about potential dangers.
