Redmond Police Department Renews Certified Autism Center™ Designation, Enhancing Inclusivity

Redmond, WALocal News

The Redmond Police Department has renewed its Certified Autism Center™ designation, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and the well-being of autistic and sensory-sensitive community members. Achieving this certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) equips officers with essential training to improve interactions with these individuals. Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe expressed pride in the department's ongoing commitment to this critical training, which began with their initial certification in 2022. The department also launched a Take Me Home program designed to help families with loved ones who have cognitive or developmental disabilities, providing a registry to assist first responders during emergencies. This initiative aims to minimize trauma and ensure timely reunification with caregivers.

Myron Pincomb, the board chairman of IBCCES, praised the department's actions, highlighting the broader impact on community safety and encouraging other organizations to follow suit. For over 20 years, IBCCES has been a leader in autism training and certification, catering to various sectors, including healthcare and education. The renewed certification and programs underscore the Redmond Police Department's role in fostering a more inclusive environment for all community members.
