Police Warn Public about Organized Crime Group Targeting Asian Community

Redmond, WALocal News

The Redmond Police Department has issued a critical warning regarding an organized crime group that is reportedly targeting the Asian community, particularly vulnerable elderly individuals. This group, believed to be of Romanian origin, engages in a series of robberies across Redmond and surrounding areas. Suspects typically operate in SUV rental vehicles and approach their victims in public spaces, such as sidewalks or parking lots, often initiating conversation by asking for directions or proposing a jewelry trade. During these interactions, they employ distraction techniques, such as placing costume jewelry on the victims, to either swap it for authentic jewelry or steal it outright. Fortunately, the victims have not suffered serious injuries, but the police urge the community to remain vigilant.

Chief Darrell Lowe clarified that while these acts are not classified as hate crimes, they represent opportunistic thefts targeting affluent neighborhoods. Residents are advised to be aware of their surroundings and to avoid wearing valuables in public. Police encourage anyone approached by strangers offering jewelry trades to report the incident to law enforcement immediately.
