Police Warn Public about Organized Crime Group Targeting Asian Community

Redmond, WALocal News

The Redmond Police Department has issued a warning about a Romanian organized crime group specifically targeting elderly members of the Asian community in Redmond, Washington. Recent reports indicate that suspects, typically driving rental SUVs, approach victims by asking for directions or proposing jewelry trades. These interactions often involve a male driver and female accomplices who employ distraction techniques, such as placing costume jewelry on victims, to swap it for their authentic valuables. Chief Darrell Lowe clarified that these are not considered hate crimes but rather opportunistic thefts aimed at vulnerable individuals in affluent neighborhoods. He urged residents to be vigilant, avoid wearing visible valuables, and to stay aware of their surroundings when walking alone.

Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported among the victims. The police recommend that individuals travel in groups and securely store their valuables when out. Anyone approached by strangers offering trades or gifts should contact local law enforcement.
