Recology - Garbage and Recycling Services

Redmond, WALocal News

Recology will begin its garbage and recycling services in Redmond on January 1, 2026, following a competitive bidding process that marks the city's first change in waste haulers in 30 years. The Redmond City Council authorized the contract on August 5, 2024, aiming to enhance services for residents. Key improvements include expanded curbside collection for hard-to-recycle items such as Styrofoam, batteries, and textiles, as well as a local call center for customer inquiries. Recology will communicate with residents through postcards and welcome packets prior to the transition. The contract features a 50% discount for low-income seniors and disabled residents, along with a free annual curbside bulky item pickup for all households.

This shift from WM to Recology aligns with new state organics management laws and emphasizes sustainability. The city had not conducted a competitive bid process for solid waste services since 1994, relying instead on direct negotiations. The comprehensive evaluation of proposals scored Recology highly for its pricing and service quality, further ensuring a beneficial outcome for Redmond residents.
