City of Redmond to Purchase Community Center Property from Lake Washington Institute of Technology
The City of Redmond has entered into a purchase agreement with Lake Washington Institute of Technology to acquire the Redmond Community Center property for $18. 5 million. Located at 6505 176th Avenue NE, the site encompasses 3. 25 acres and includes a 20,491 square-foot facility that has been leased by the city since 2017. Mayor Angela Birney highlighted the purchase's significance, stating it will allow the community center to serve residents well into the future.
The acquisition is projected to save the city $2. 9 million over the lifespan of the facility compared to leasing costs. Funding has been set aside in the City’s Capital Improvements Plan since 2018, ensuring no impact on other capital projects like the Maintenance and Operations Center. LWTech's President, Dr. Amy Morrison, noted that selling the property enables the college to enhance its fiscal stability and invest in improvements at its Kirkland campus.
The purchase agreement received approvals from various governing bodies in October 2025, with the closing date scheduled for on or before October 31, 2025. This transaction underscores a collaborative effort to benefit both the college and the Redmond community.
