Puyallup warns of owl encounters on popular trail

Puyallup, WALocal News

An incident on the Clark’s Creek Loop Trail in Puyallup has shed light on unexpected owl aggression, prompting the city to warn hikers. Cynthia Woolbright, a local resident, reported being swooped multiple times by an owl, which she suspects may have been a barred owl protecting its nest. The encounter occurred on November 30, leading to increased awareness of owl sightings along the trail. City spokesperson Eric Johnson confirmed that signs have been posted to alert hikers and provide safety tips. Woolbright, who has a profound respect for wildlife, emphasized that she does not want the owl harmed and believes it has every right to defend its territory.

Local wildlife officials have been contacted to determine if the owl’s behavior is linked to nesting activity. The city has noted that such owl sightings are rare in the area but acknowledges the importance of caution for trail users. Overall, this incident highlights the need for awareness and respect for wildlife, particularly during twilight hours.
