Latah County will soon send inmates to Nez Perce County

Pullman, WALocal News

Latah County will soon transport inmates to Nez Perce County jail due to the Latah County jail's failure to comply with standards. Sheriff Richard Skiles announced that necessary repairs, estimated at $13 million, would only extend the facility's utility by 5 to 10 years. By October 1, the jail will become a court holding facility, staffed during court hours, while after-hours detainees will be sent to Nez Perce County. Moscow City Administrator Bill Belknap warned that the closure will significantly strain local police resources, with the department making about 250 arrests annually. The situation raises concerns over transportation costs and risks associated with transporting detainees.

The sheriff's office is working with Latah County Commissioners to explore funding for a new jail facility, with options including a voter-approved bond or a local option tax. Capt. Shane Anderson stated that the county is coordinating with city officials to anticipate high-arrest events. The transition to Nez Perce County jail underscores the urgent need for a long-term solution to jail capacity and safety issues.
