Berney to retire as counseling point man
Mike Berney, Executive Director of Palouse River Counseling, will retire in December after leading the organization for over 30 years. The Pullman-based nonprofit has appointed Clinical Director Kathleen Stewardson as his successor following a national search. Berney, who transformed the organization from Whitman County Mental Health into an independent clinic, has overseen its growth to more than 40 employees. He highlighted the increased community access to mental health services and a cultural shift toward greater acceptance of behavioral health. The organization offers a range of services, including individual therapy and substance abuse treatment, with a focus on affordability.
Berney noted that mental health is increasingly viewed as integral to overall health, reflecting a positive change in public attitudes. Relationships between the center and local primary care practitioners and law enforcement have also improved, enhancing community support for individuals in need. He expressed confidence that Stewardson will build on this progress and further expand services for residents.
