Police dogs and their handlers come to Lewiston to hone their skills

Pullman, WALocal News

The Idaho Police Canine Association Conference in Lewiston hosts around 50 police dogs and their handlers this week, focusing on specialized training in drug detection, bomb detection, and patrol. Daily drills occur in various locations, including the old Shopko and Brammer buildings, providing real-world scenarios for the dogs. Capt. Chris Reese from the Lewiston Police Department highlights the need for handlers to expose their dogs to different situations. Handlers will undergo 40 hours of training, which includes practical drills and updates on relevant case law.

The conference culminates in a competition on Friday, where teams will demonstrate their skills in detection and apprehension. This training is crucial for maintaining high standards in law enforcement canine units. The event fosters collaboration and knowledge-sharing among police departments statewide. Such initiatives are vital for ensuring public safety and effective law enforcement operations.
