Port of Whitman County seeking public input on Oakesdale Mill site

Pullman, WALocal News

The Port of Whitman County is actively seeking community input on potential uses for the historic Oakesdale Mill site, with a survey open until July 31. Acquired from the Innovia Foundation in September, the 134-year-old mill is one of the last of its kind in Whitman County. The port received a $75,000 grant from the Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board to conduct necessary feasibility and environmental assessments. In addition, a $40,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology will fund the installation of electric vehicle chargers at the site, adding to local infrastructure. Port officials emphasize that the development will take several years, aiming to create a venue that supports local events and businesses.

This initiative is significant for community engagement, as residents’ input will shape the mill's future. The preservation of the mill is seen as vital to maintaining the region's history. Ultimately, the port aims to enhance the local economy through thoughtful development of this historic site.
