GOP again mulls censure of McCann

Pullman, WALocal News

The Legislative District 6 Republican Committee plans to hold a censure hearing for Rep. Lori McCann on June 30, assessing her voting record's fidelity to the Idaho Republican Party Platform during the 2025 session. The process, initiated by a petition from at least 20% of district committee officers, could lead to significant penalties, including disqualification from running as a Republican for five years if censured twice. McCann, who represents more than 52,000 constituents, argues that her voting reflects the diverse perspectives of her district rather than strict adherence to party lines. She expressed frustration with the platform's evolving nature and highlighted specific planks, such as the elimination of the people's right to vote for U.

S. senators and stringent abortion measures, that she finds problematic. Bouma views the hearing as a necessary step for local Republicans to voice their opinions and ensure lawmakers are accountable. Past instances, such as Rep. Stephanie Mickelsen's dual censure and subsequent electoral success, suggest that censure may not significantly impact a lawmaker's career.

The Idaho Secretary of State's office has not clarified the enforceability of the party's rules regarding censure. McCann, unable to attend the hearing due to prior vacation plans, informed the committee of her absence.
